Orlando Child Support Lawyer
Divorce Attorneys Serving Orlando, Florida
Child support is typically awarded to the custodial parent in a Florida
divorce
. The court has the power to order either parent or even both parents to pay support, depending upon the particular circumstances of the case. Child support amounts are based upon the parents’ ability to pay, as well as the specific needs of the child. Support will usually be required until the child turns 18, but special arrangements may be worked out regarding college, or if the child is disabled in some way and will require support for life.
Florida has specific child support guidelines set forth that the judge must abide by in making a ruling. If the judge wishes to make an exception, this must be explained. The court may also modify the child support amount if a substantial change in circumstances occurs that warrants a modification. In addition to ordering child support, the court may also order a parent to acquire medical insurance for the child or life insurance in the event that the parent loses his or her life before the child turns 18.
